Snowflake Ornament

We kicked off winter this week by learning about snow. It couldn’t have been a more perfect morning to teach the littles about it; as we watched it fall gracefully from the sky. There is something magical about the first snowfall of the year. I felt just as excited as they were. We read our Usborne book called “What is Snow?” and then worked on a simple snowflake project.

I had so much fun making these, that I want to share it with you. Plus, there was little to no set up time or cost to do this craft and the kids loved practicing their fine motor skills with the scissors! This was a win, win for me.

Materials Needed: Scissors, Paper, Mod Podge, String, (Glitter or Jems – if you want to get fancy)

If you are working with kids of course, kid safe scissors.

 

 

Step 1: 

Start by folding the corner over, then cut around the edges. This will make a perfect square that is folded into a triangle.

 

Step 2: 

Fold the triangle over so it creates another triangle. Then fold it again. . . to create another triangle – only this time open it back up so you see a crease running through the center like this:

Step 3: 

Next, fold each side down using the center crease line. . .

Step 4: 

Flip it over and cut straight across the bottom and then cut in a triangle like this. . .

Step 5: 

Now you can draw your pattern. You can use the same pattern as shown. It helps if you start with triangles. These seem to make the best shapes for the snowflake. If you are having smaller children do this project, I recommend drawing in the lines for them and letting them practice cutting along the lines. You could also use a paper punch, but it can be hard for their little fingers to press down hard enough to cut these out. Also, if you cut the tip of the triangle you will have a whole in the center of your snowflake. I cut a triangle off the tip and it made a unique star shape in mine (See step 6).

Step 6: 

You can now open up the folded paper to reveal this beautiful magical snowflake! I will be adding some Mod Podge to strengthen the paper and maybe even some glitter. Attach a string – and you have an ornament for the Christmas tree!
